of the newtown shootings." >>> and now that senator john kerry has been nominated for secretary of state, the focus is shifting to his potential replacement in massachusetts. senator scott brown, who was defeated last month by elizabeth warren, appears to be the clear choice for republicans. a poll conducted before the selection of kerry found brown dominating the field. the wbur poll also shows the senator topping any democrat by eight points. brown is yet to say whether he plans to run in the special election. as for the democrats, it's only clear who's not running right now. ted kennedy jr. was floated as a possible contender, but he says he's not interested. kennedy said he was grateful for the offers of support, but he considers connecticut to be his home, leaving the door open for a potential future run in that state. and actor and director ben affleck isn't ready to leave hollywood. the "argo" star, who had showed interest in politics, confirms he doesn't want kerry's seat, saying "i love massachusetts and our political process, but i am not running for office." >>> former preside

after the newtown, connecticut, school shootings, another debate heating up about whether to bring guns into schools. a new poll suggests 64% of americans think arming at least one school official would be at least some what effective. but what about arming the teachers? abc's cecilia vega tonight with some of those teachers who say yes. >> okay, so, now what do i do? >> reporter: the gun is fake, but these utah teachers fear the threat facing their classrooms is very real. today, 200 of those teachers became students -- >> ready to fire. >> reporter: packing a conference room on their holiday break to learn how to carry a concealed weapon on the job. and how to protect their schools from an armed intruder. >> the safety is the biggest part. and to be able to use them appropriately is really quite a high priority for me. >> reporter: utah is one of few states where public schools allow guns on campus. but in the wake of the shooting at sandy hook, the push is on to add more states to that list. arizona's attorney general wants every school principal or the principal's designee armed. in

%. that didn't happen. one of the issues, newtown connecticut and the news cycle that went on there. people started rethinking do i really want to be in a shopping mall right now? do i want to be spending money? i do want to be shopping? it really colored the tone. you are right, typically it works just the opposite. >> people reassessing a lot of their value systems. you and i talked about that earlier. let's consider maybe the flip side. is there a silver lining in any of this for consumers? >> well, obviously black friday now not what it was. but i have got to tell you that the discounts we're going to see after christmas this year are going to be dramatic. >> will they pay us to take it away? >> almost. we're seeing 75%. not unusual at all to get 75% discounts. here are the companies that we are seeing already saying big sales to come. best buy, wal-mart, target, toys r us. across the board you are seeing heavy discounting. bad news for retailers because this is where they make their money in the year. for consumers, maybe consumers who were on a budget this year, this is an opportunity

in newtown, connecticut. holiday sales are crucial as a sign for economic strength. they are looking forward to you coming in making returns not just making returns but using the gift cards buy ago few things for yourself. since it was a little slower this holiday season there may be deeper discounts you can take advantage of. on-line sales didn't suffer quite as much but know the rules before you head out to the store ifs you are planning on returning items you bought on-line. there are different rules for each store. some allow you to bring the purchases to the brick and mortar stores. others don't allow you to do that. before you wait in the long crazy lines know what you do for each retailer. >> thank you, tef stephanie. if you got gift cards stick around. we will tell you what you can do with them if you don't want the gift cards. 12 minutes after the hour. many blame their blunders for the deadly attack on benghazi. wait until you hear what is next for the four state department officials who were supposed to be out of a job. >> bernie madoff giving advice to wall street from behind bar

the post-newtown witch hunt the last week. it's unfortunate. this should be a time of sober reflection and an inclusive time for every american, with a diverse viewpoint, to be a participant in the national conversation about gun violence, about the culture, and somehow so many people, particularly in the crazed anti-gun liberal media, have demonized the n.r.a. and its millions of law abiding, peaceful gun owners who are practicing their constitutionally protected second amendment rights. self-defense, as so many people out there know, is oft often, and they put forth some good ideas, good ideas that have been embraced across the country in school districts in oklahoma, in texas. there are many, many, many armed teachers in this country and they deserve a voice, too. >> clayton: absolutely. you talk about a reasoned discussion though, that's what many conservatives thought was missing from this press conference and you mentioned the liberal media, but the new york post in the front page called him a loon, the n.r.a. loon in a bizarre rant over newtown and they felt what was missing-- i

everything but the guns for the shooting in newtown, connecticut. sheri wilson tweets the nra sickens me. everybody is responsible but them. the nra needs to face the truth. no matter what the entertainment media did, the nra provided the tools for the perpetrators to execute their plans. get rid of the guns. and the nra has blood on their hands, and anybody associated with them will suffer politically. keep sharing your thoughts with us on our facebook page and twitter using the #edshow. still to come, the fiscal cliff stalemate could cost john boehner his job as house speaker. there are millions of unemployed americans out there. it could cost them their benefits and a lot of pain. that's ahead. stay with us. >>> welcome back to "the ed show." nobody likes a scrooge, and i've got the numbers to prove it. darden restaurants, ever heard of them in the umbrella corporation behind chains olive garden and red lobster, well, they did their best to avoid providing their workers with health care. now they're paying the price. here is the story. back in october, the company launched an anti-oba

of the newtown tragedy? it's hard to say. >> but it may be a combination of all of those. we got a sense from the guests we brought on earlier this week, on monday, that it was not a great holiday selling season, as we ended the last day before christmas. and all those may be the reasons, carl. i'm positive i didn't think people really understood the fiscal cliff. i may have been wrong. perhaps it was something that weighed on people's minds. the weather always at issue. it could actually have been warmer weather as well that contributed. we've had some analysts say that because people don't feel they have to go out and buy a coat. >> because it will never get cold again. >> except today, when it's 28 degrees. we'll see how after christmas does. internet also, it doesn't appear as online sales are up as p as anticipated. and perhaps they made up for the loss of the brick and mortar. >> you were pointing out before the show, luxury was not immune to this. you would think it would be more in tune to the consequences a cliff. >> you can take a look at the mid-atlantic and northeast regions, thos

. this is from the journal news, the newspaper. the massacre in newtown, connecticut remains top of mind for many of our readers. our readers are understandably interested to know about guns in their neighborhood. we possibilitied the names and addresses of residents who are licensed to own hand guns through routine freedom of information law public records request. michael, that makes -- does that implicitly assume that anybody who owns a gun is going to go off on some massacre like what we saw up in connecticut? >> well, yes. this list exposes an inherent bias among the publishers and editors of this newspaper that somehow own ago hand gun is socially unacceptable. using the tactics of the extreme left to try to embarrass or bully or to try to convince these people that whatever they're doing that's inconsistent with the beliefs of the publisher is somehow unacceptable. we certainly want to insure that there is a right of all constitutional rights to be able to possess hand guns, as well as be able to speak about whatever you want to publish whatever you want. in this case, you have to preserve
